The Area

Walk #1 - Half a Mile to Little John's Grave.
The Scotsmans Pack is internationally famed as a traditional Inn located in Hathersage, Hope Valley just a short walk away from Little John's grave in St Michaels church that overlooks the beautiful gritstone village of Hathersage.

Drive #1 - Gliding Club.
Highlow Hall is 1.5 miles to the South of the Scotsmans Pack - take the road to Grindleford under the railway bridge, over the river bridge, turn right opposite The Plough and carry on up the hill. Highlow is on the left. You can follow the road for a further three miles through Abney (no pubs - a dry village!) up to the gliding club and Bretton Clough for some really spectacular open views of the area.

The top of the hill directly South from the Scotsmans Pack is a wood known locally at Blue Bell Wood, you can see why in this photograph taken in April.

1.5 miles North of St Michaels church over public footpaths is the famous North Lees Hall an imposing and highly dramatic, tower house dating back to 1590, with Stanage Edge in the background. When Victorian novelist Charlotte Bronte visited North Lees Hall in 1845, it became the inspiration for her romance, Jane Eyre. Charlotte renamed North Lees "Thornfield", the home of her hero, Mr Rochester.
